The Brick & Beam Society today released its 2017 Community Investment Application and is seeking applications from qualified organizations addressing a community need in Greater Portland in the area of early childhood education and childhood poverty.
On May 23rd, members of United Way of Greater Portland's Tocqueville Society and Brick and Beam Society gathered at the Maine Historical Society. Elaine Rosen (Chair of the Board of Assurant, Inc., Chair of the Board of The Kresge Foundation, former President of Unum, and former United Way of Greater Portland Campaign Chair) shared powerful words on the importance of philanthropy, mentorship, and developing community leaders.
Did you know that United Way of Greater Portland’s community-wide volunteer event, Day of Caring, recently turned twenty-five? In celebration, members of the Brick & Beam Society personified their motto as “a group of doers” and participated in sprucing up the outdoor space for the kiddos at Youth and Family Outreach (YFO).
We caught up with one of Brick & Beam’s Programming Vice-Chairs, Mike Young of Unum, and he graciously shared his takeaways with us.
It’s been a few months since the Brick & Beam Society awarded $50,000 to the Congolese Community of Maine (CoCoMaine) and opportunities to get more involved are definitely available.
So, what has the United Way of Greater Portland’s emerging leaders been up to since then?
You may know that members of the Brick & Beam Society invest their time, skills, and finances to make a measurable difference in their community— for our initial impact, we specifically invested in projects that would benefit early childhood education and poverty and would be high-impact, sustainable, replicable, innovative, holistic, and collaborative.
Members taking a broad view of the community, bringing leaders together, and building momentum for action is our mission and what makes us stand out. Recently, we caught up with Tim Griffin (Portfolio Manager, H.M. Payson & Co.), Chair of our Programming Committee, to chat about “See-Suite: See the Inside Track of Business Leadership in Greater Portland,” which is coming to Members this summer.
