Calling all Summer Readers! For many children, summer can be a time when they lose ground academically. Now in its fourth year, Starting Strong Summer Readers is a low barrier program aimed at reducing reading loss in students K - grade 3. Summer Readers pairs children with a reading companion at free lunch sites in Portland and encourages them to enjoy books on their own. Students take a book home each time they read, helping them build a small home library.
Location: This year, Brick and Beam members along with staff from the United Way of Greater Portland will be volunteering with children at the Boys and Girls Club in Riverton Park.
Dates and times: Every Wednesday from June 28th through August 16th - 12:30-1:30 PM (you can volunteer for one or several)
Description: Starting Strong Summer Readers is looking for Brick and Beam members to volunteer each Wednesday with UWGP staff! Volunteers will be trained on the best ways to read to and with children on Tuesday, June 20 from 4:30 to 5:30 PM at the United Way of Greater Portland. This is a fun opportunity to support a child's literacy in a casual, community environment!
