See-Suite: See the Inside Track of Business Leadership with Casey Gilbert & Quincy Hentzel

On the heels of our past See-Suite hosts, Mike Simonds of Unum US and Steve Smith of L.L.Bean, Brick & Beam invites you to join us for an opportunity to hear from two more dynamic leaders - Casey Gilbert, Executive Director of Portland Downtown, and Quincy Hentzel, Chief Executive Officer of Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce.

RSVP now and join Casey and Quincy on Wednesday, June 13 from 11:30-1:00 PM for lunch at the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce and a unique perspective on volunteerism as a pathway to leadership in our community!

Too excited? Can't wait?

Learn more about Casey:

Casey Gilbert is the Executive Director of Portland Downtown, a 501c4 nonprofit business improvement district.

In addition to her role with Portland Downtown, she is a student in the PhD in Public Policy program at USM and a board member of the Portland Community Chamber of Commerce. Prior to her arrival in Maine, she spent 7 years in Florida where she assisted her family with a real estate project and was the Executive Director of Melbourne Main Street. Fun fact: Casey completed her master's degree in Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University in Adelaide, Australia.

Learn more about Quincy:

Since being named as CEO in July 2017, Quincy Hentzel has committed to making the Chamber more representative of its communities by adding new initiatives, events, and programming. Two of those new events – Kegs & Issues, and Women of the Chamber, have quickly become two of the Chamber’s most popular series.

Prior to accepting the role of permanent CEO, Hentzel worked at Industrium, a fully integrated public relations/advertising agency, where she focused on public relations/public affairs work for a variety of clients across the country. Prior to Hentzel’s time at Industrium, she spent 11 years working as the Director of Governmental Affairs for the Maine Credit Union League, where she worked in Augusta and Washington, D.C. advocating on behalf of Maine’s credit union industry. Hentzel has also dedicated a lot of her time to causes she is passionate about – such as serving on the boards of directors of the Center for Grieving Children, Rippleffect and Community Financial Literacy.

See-Suite is all about Brick & Beam members having the opportunity to meet with CEOs, successful entrepreneurs, a diverse portfolio of leaders in finance, service, master brewers and fashion blog worthy local designers, all in an intimate, small group cohort-style discussion over sips and snacks.

Don't miss out! RSVP by Monday, June 11 as these members-only events will be first come, first serve with limited space at the Chamber (443 Congress St, Portland, ME 04101).

Pop-Up: BYOB (Bring Your Own Book) at First Wednesday with UWGP's Brick & Beam Society

Join the Brick & Beam Society on Wednesday, April 4 for our third annual Bring Your Own Book event! Belatedly celebrating the illustrious Dr. Seuss’ birthday and Read Across America Day (March 2) Brick & Beam Society is popping up again for the third year from 5:30-7:00 PM to support early childhood literacy in our local community with our friends at Maine Craft Distilling (123 Washington Avenue, East End).

This event is FREE and open to the public with plenty of complimentary off-street parking, but please bring new or gently used books written by educators’ favorites— Tomie dePaola, Anna Dewdney, and/ or Mo Willems, authors of childhood must-reads like Strega Nona, Llama Llama Red Pajama, and The Pigeon Needs a Bath!

In our inaugural year, Brick & Beam members and friends collected 150 books for Westbrook Schools’ annual author study series, where students across the district read multiple books from the same author; last year, we broke our stretch goal of 200 books for students in local Portland elementary schools! Can we beat those numbers and fill the bookshelves? Join us in booking it to get these authors’ titles in time:

Questions? Feel free to e-mail us at brickandbeam@unitedwaygp.org. First Wednesdays— our monthly pop-up happy hours are an easy way to meet some of our members, learn about our innovative way of approaching philanthropy thanks to our roots within the United Way of Greater Portland network. The brewery will be open to the public; all are welcome, but please RSVP by Tuesday, April 3.

UWGP's Brick & Beam Third (epic) Annual Mitten Mob!

Winter is coming… and it will be here longer than just a flash! Join United Way of Greater Portland’s Brick & Beam Society for our third (epic) annual giving flash mob to collect cold weather items for kids in our shared community who need to stay warm this season.

In just two years, Brick & Beam members with the help of community members and local area business have kept 1,586 hands warm. Last year, you helped us collect 549 pairs of mittens and gloves and an additional 136 hats – can we top that? Join us in shattering that record in a flash [mob]!

Our suggested registry is live via Amazon, so between now and 7 PM on Wednesday, December 6, we are asking community members to gather together as many NEW pairs of mittens/ gloves/ hats for boys and girls. Please note hats are especially needed among the elementary school population, as they can’t be shared!

Schedule of events:

Wednesday, 12/6 from noon till 1 PM – Brick & Beam members and United Way of Greater Portland staff will be by the statute in Monument Square collecting cold weather gear donations. All the donations will be distributed to schools in the greater Portland area to be sent along with children who need them the most this winter.

Wednesday, 12/6 from 5-7 PM – Join Brick & Beam for our monthly pop-up, First Wednesday, this month featuring local establishment MAPS (64 Market Street, Portland, ME). These monthly pop-up happy hours are an easy way to meet some of our members and learn about our innovative way of approaching philanthropy thanks to our roots within the United Way of Greater Portland network.

Missing out on Wednesday, 12/6? Send your cold weather gear donation directly to United Way of Greater Portland (One Canal Plaza, Suite 300, Portland, ME 04101) via our Amazon Registry.

Friends, colleagues – all are welcome; bundle up and we’ll see you at Monument Square and MAPS for the third annual Mitten Mob on Wednesday, December 6! Questions? Visit our Facebook event, or feel free to e-mail brickandbeam@unitedwaygp.org.
